Work Places

These are some of the places where our family worked in Eureka and around Humboldt County

When we moved back to Eureka in 1956, my father went
into business with two of his cousins Donny and Little Irv.
They bought the only truck terminal in Eureka.  It had a
60 foot scale and an 80 foot grease pit.
Donny and Little Irv were not the best business people
and after a few years they had to find other jobs.
Both my mother, Irene, and my father, Irving, worked
for an auto supply company, Western Auto at 4th and G sts.
My mother worked for many years
for the IRS located in the Lloyd Building

She was an revenue agent and was authorized to carry a gun.
My father sold furniture and appliances
for Everybody's Furniture Mart
My first year at Humboldt, I worked for a freight company,
Bay Freight whose focus was "LTL" (less than truck load)
hauling between Arcata and the Bay Area.

Ask me sometime about my borrowing gasoline.
Just before I moved to San Jose, I worked
for Simpson Timber Company in Korbel, California
just east of Blue Lake.

I was a "sawyer - re-trimmer-man"
My brother, Mike, worked for a while at Weyerhauser
making particle board.  This photo is in the area of what
was once a huge factory covering acres.  I don't think
the factory is there any more.
Mike worked at the main post office in Eureka.
Working for the Post Office enabled him to transfer
to San Jose, thus starting the great Sabes migration south.
